ABOUT MATTHEW
I'm a composer interested in arranging, producing, and writing songs within the New York metropolitan area. I’m excited to share my deep passion for storytelling through the music I write, which I hope listeners can empathize with and enjoy as a community.
I wrote my first composition for piano when I was 8 years old, a year after starting private instruction. The song was this little 8-bar melody about “making a difference” for my elementary school’s PTA Reflections Program in Bel Air, Maryland; I finished third in the contest, was incredibly proud of my work, and wanted to write more. My neighborhood friends and I decided to start a “jazz band” after we joined our school’s concert band, writing little tunes in Finale Notepad 2009 and practicing them whenever we hung out. I enjoyed sharing music with my friends and connecting with them more deeply.
When I moved to New Jersey in 2010, I enrolled at Cornerstone Music Studios in Millstone Township to study under accomplished pianist Juan Pablo Horcasitas. He inspired me to begin working on an original piano composition, “Variazione”, which explored different variations upon the melody from my “making a difference” composition. I debuted “Variazione” at a recital when I was 12, and from then on, I couldn’t stop writing. My next piano instructor, Greg DeLuca, continued encouraging me to write. It brought me a lot of satisfaction to combine different melodies in the same breadth and it felt like the possibilities were endless. I continued nurturing my passion for music throughout middle and high school. After participating in middle school musical productions and concert band, I joined the award-winning Allentown Redbird Marching Band, playing in field shows that placed among the top of USBands’ Group IVA Championships, and the Allentown High School Theatre Club, performing in plays and winter musicals. I also began taking voice lessons under Brandon Motz and Corey Everly and was compelled to audition for the 2016 New Jersey All-State Mixed Chorus, which inspired my love for choral music.
Upon my acceptance to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, I participated in Marist Singers under the College’s Music Scholarship, continuing my private vocal instruction under Bryan Lynch and Sarah Williams. I auditioned for and became a member of Marist Chamber Singers and Time Check, Marist’s all-male-identifying a cappella group. Within Time Check, I began arranging songs of different genres to be performed for our gigs, concerts, and other professional opportunities. I also composed an original song for Time Check to perform, “Keep On”, which led me to pursue music — my passion — professionally. My peers, education, and performance experiences at Marist ultimately prepared me to successfully apply to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, for an undergraduate degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. Gaining hands-on experience in commercial scoring, jingle writing, orchestration, and professional mixing, Berklee was the best academic institution I could have imagined to broaden my studies in music and network as part of a vast creative community. My piano composition Sincronie premiered at Music by Young and Restless Composers at Berklee, an event held by Massachusetts General Hospital in April 2023, and I graduated with a Bachelor in Music and Summa Cum Laude honors in May 2024. I released my debut single, "Two Friends," in October 2024.
Working with others keeps my creativity from feeling isolated and monotonous. My collaborations with concert bands, choirs, and smaller ensembles have enriched my understanding of music and provided lifelong friendships and memories. Connecting and empathizing with fellow musicians through my work allows me to feel that I am putting something meaningful out into the world that can make a difference — that can establish a sense of community among other musicians and listeners and inspire them to be their best.
I believe that music and the arts are a vessel for inspiring change and progress. As I develop a professional platform, I am working to establish a creative safe space where people can feel acknowledged, supported, and accepted. My arrangements, compositions, original songs, and produced works will strive to promote allyship, solidarity, and action against injustices present in our greater society. I would like to help people through the music I write, and I would also like to spotlight the work of those from marginalized communities who may traditionally not be given the space, allowing them to tell their stories through their music.
